Between October 6 and December 22, 2018, Ghepard Communication is honored to organize a cultural event, a unique exhibition that brings together institutions at the national and world level in Cluj: : The Institute of History „George Barițiu” of the Romanian Academy, „Lucian Blaga” Central University Library of Cluj-Napoca, and Oxford Brookes University. This exhibition presents for the first time to the wider public, issues related to the 1930s anthropological research in Romania..

The exhibition shows research by the Romanian anthropologists in this period, namely by Gh. Popoviciu, Francisc Rainer, Olga Necrasov, OC Lecca, Ion Chelcea and Iordache Făcăoaru. In addition, it includes material collected by the Austrian scholars Josef Weninger, Margarete Weninger, Eberhard Geyer, Dora Maria Könner, Robert Routil and Albert Harrasser in the Swabian village Marienfeld (Teremia Mare) from Banat, in 1933 and 1934. The Museum of Natural History Vienna has made these documents available and they are presented for the first time to the Romanian public.

The Viennese study in the village of Marienfield will be accompanied by research on the biological problems of Transylvanian Saxons of the same period, especially those conducted by Heinrich Siegmund, Alfred Csallner and Wilhelm Schunn, and those related to the research done by the Hungarian anthropologist Lajos Bartucz in the Arad area during the period preceding the First World War.

Besides the scientific aspect related to the anthropological research of the different ethnic communities in Romania, the exhibition aims to familiarize the public, including the younger generations with the history of anthropology, in the belief that a better knowledge of this history will be useful for a better understanding of the interwar period.

The exhibition was developed as collaboration between the following institutions: Bucharest Municipality Museum, „Lucian Blaga” Central University Library of Cluj-Napoca, Naturhistorisches Museum Wien, Austria; Center for Medical Humanities, Oxford Brookes University, UK; University of Oxford, UK; Arts & Humanities Research Council, UK. The exhibition Science and Ethnicity. Anthropological research in Romania in the 1930s is on view from October 6th to December 22nd, 2018, at the „Lucian Blaga” Central University Library of Cluj-Napoca.

Marius Turda – curator of the exhibition „Science and Ethnicity. Anthropological Research in the 1930s” is an Oxfordian par excellence. Marius has been teaching at Oxford Brookes since 2005. He is a member of the British Royal Society of History and the founder director of the Cantemir Institute at the University of Oxford. His books and articles recommend him as one of the best specialists at present in fields such as the history of eugenics, anthropology, racism and nationalist ideologies in Central Europe.
In other words, a man of character who never forgot his roots and the places he holds dear. He has become a personality in the field of science, continuing to excel through his work in the world’s most famous university center.
